Pickup trucks are extremely popular in many developing countries, and pickup trucks with a full range of passenger and commercial use have been favored by people. In the United States, pickup trucks swept the top three best-selling cars.
Looking for a pickup truck to join the club is a good choice, but the functionality of a pickup truck makes his choice quite different from the vast majority of passenger cars.
Now is the perfect time to enter the pickup truck market because there is something for everyone. But while options have never been more prolific, prices have steadily climbed. Here's a guide to help you get the most out of your pickup truck money.
Here are 8 top tips you can use to evaluate and choose options that meet those needs.
1. Pickup Truck Type
Types of pickup trucks are usually divided by their carrying capacity and size.
Compact pickups are often the cheapest way to join the club, and many pickup truck manufacturers offer it.
Choose from a variety of pickup trucks: compact pickups, mid-size pickups, full-size pickups, heavy-duty pickups, and more.
As with all types, buyers can choose from extended-cab and crew-cab body styles (regular cabs are hard to come by these days); two-, four- or all-wheel drive; and a plethora of engine and transmission combinations.
Properly sizing your pickup truck is important. If you save money and opt for a smaller size, a pickup truck may not be able to carry what you need. Likewise, if you choose more pickups than you need, it will cost more to buy and fill. Plus, you'll have a hard time fitting into a parking lot or narrow driveway.
Most experts would recommend slightly overestimating your requirements. A good rule of thumb is 10% more capacity than you need.
2. Power system
For some buyers, choosing the right engine size will be a balance between having enough power and getting good fuel economy.
Most pickups come with four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines. They also have a choice of two- or four-wheel drive.
When choosing an engine, you need to balance the trade-offs between price, horsepower, and fuel economy.
If you often find yourself driving in winter weather or off-road conditions, four-wheel drive may be a wise choice.
Another option has to do with the axle ratio. Pickup trucks can often be configured with a range of optional axle ratios, and your choice will directly affect the vehicle's fuel economy and towing capacity.
In short, the higher the axle ratio number, the more you can tow, but the less fuel efficient you are.
3. Cab size
You need to decide how much space inside and outside. Most manufacturers offer three or four cab sizes, regular (two doors, no rear seats), extended (two or four doors, small rear seats), and crew (four doors, large rear seats). Keep in mind that more space usually comes with a higher price tag when it comes to cab and bed size.
Regular cabs are the cheapest, but they tend to only offer basic, work-oriented configurations. The extended cab is more useful, and the crew cab offers roomy accommodations, especially in full-size pickup trucks.
Extended-cab pickup trucks have rear seats that can be cramped for adults with limited legroom, although they are generally acceptable for kids. The real advantage of a longer cab is the extra interior storage space. With four full-size doors and a rear-seat (or cargo) area, passenger-cab pickup trucks are comparable to midsize and full-size SUVs, but these larger cabs often feature a smaller cargo bed.
Keep in mind that cab size may affect the length of the bed, this is the next choice you will make. In other words, if you want a standard-length pickup truck and a crew cab, a larger cab takes the length away from the pickup truck chassis. If you want a bigger cab and a long bed, you end up with a longer wheelbase and a pickup truck that's harder to park and maneuver.
4. Bed size
This is where pickup trucks differ from all other vehicles. Open cargo boxes are suitable for heavy household chores such as moving large appliances, bulky furniture, tools or equipment, motorcycles, snow blowers, and outdoor-only goods such as wood chips, fertilizer and trash.
Standard bed lengths are 8 feet in full-size pickups, but only around 6 feet in extended-cab models. Four-door crew cabs can often be fitted with 5-foot or 6-foot beds. Compact pickup beds typically run 5 to 6 feet, depending on cab configuration.
While it's nice to have plenty of cargo space, combining the crew cab with an 8-foot bed might mean you can't keep your pickup truck in the garage.
There are many bed accessories available, including LED lights, tailgate steps, retractable loading ramps, tie-down loops, pile pockets and remote tailgate releases. Some even feature electric tailgates. Spray-on and recessed liners are popular for extra protection when hauling items on the bed.
5. Drivability
Pickup trucks are designed to carry weight on the bed, so most offering a driving experience with the bed empty is a negative.
While pickup trucks are designed for commercial use, that's not a reason to punish passengers with a poor driving experience.
When it comes to transmissions, choosing between manual and automatic can be difficult. If you spend a lot of time in traffic, an automatic transmission will save you unnecessary shifting while driving around the city. Pickup trucks with manual transmissions generally cost less.
6. Safety
Safety rating is always an important consideration when buying any new car. Before driving your new pickup truck out of the parking lot, be sure to do some research.
Consumer Reports' safety ratings include assessments of crash avoidance capabilities and crash test results, based on tests conducted by the government and third parties. In addition, our road tests detailed questions about child seat installation and headlight performance.
Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection and Blind Spot Warning (BSW) are collision avoidance technologies that CR believes should be standard on all vehicles. These should be on the next new model you buy.
7. Choose decoration and function
With the advancement of technology, pickup trucks are the most widely used commercial vehicles in the market, and their passenger attributes must be the focus of every buyer.
Many passenger car features that are widely used in pickup trucks, such as head-up displays, parking assist, seat ventilation, etc., sound very good, but there is no doubt that it will add a certain cost.
Just remember to think carefully about what you need and decide ahead of time on extras you can't use. If you know you want more than standard packaging, it might be a good idea to list the most important things before buying.
8. Towing capacity
All pickup trucks are capable of carrying heavy loads and towing trailers. Pickup trucks are great for towing boats, cars, utility trailers and campers behind them.
The owner's manual will state the maximum weight that can be carried (payload) or towed.
Buyers can have a manufacturer or dealer install the towing equipment, or add it themselves using aftermarket parts.
Buying from the factory is the best option, as installation can involve complex wiring of trailer brakes and lights, special attachment points for trailer hitches, and accessories such as heavy-duty alternators and transmission oil coolers.
Additionally, manufacturer-designed packaging is backed by a factory warranty. Most pickups can be ordered with a trailer brake controller.
For must-use traction, consider a diesel engine; many come in both regular and heavy-duty models. The higher torque output associated with the diesel engine makes heavy towing easier.
Knowing how much weight you need to move will help determine whether you need a light or heavy pickup truck. Remember, bigger is not always better.
If you buy a heavy duty pickup truck, expect to pay more at the pump and experience a tougher ride.
Depending on your location, there are different regulations and you may need special permits and additional fees. So, you need to consider these things carefully, after all, money is what limits your options the most.
